Hardware new wii drive

buddy of mine had one of the old wiis that would play backup games through dvd drive. the dvd drive went out and he sent it to nintendo to get it fixed and they put the new drive in it and upgraded his system menu. could he be able to buy an older used wii for parts and pull the drive out of it and put it in his? or would he be better offf to buy a usb hard drive?
 
I'd say get a usb hard drive... its less hassle.

You can freely change the Wii's disc drive for any revision you want, but... yeah, I'd agree with mistajase and go for a USB hard drive. (The Wii drives and USB hard drives have comparable prices.)

Unless your friend wants to play GameCube backups, for which a disc drive swap would be required. (Softmod GameCube USB loaders will never exist.)
