Should I buy Tony Hawk: American Wasteland for BadUpdate? Because I still plan to play Rock Band with the DLCs, although I don't plan to actually play Tony Hawk.... Or should I use bibarub's fork of BadAvatar or wait for an official update?

You don't need to buy anything. You want to use abadavatar 1.3 and then install it to mmu/hdd and then you don't even need a usb stick poking out of your 360.

I saw that video earlier.

MVG now prefers a software exploit over RGH. It's good to see. RGH offers a few advantages, but overall it isn't needed anymore for running homebrew and backups/mods. Without it modding the Xbox 360 would be a lot more difficult. Even Ryan used an RGH when developing the exploit.
I do respect it though for what it has allowed as well as JTAG.

Now though, RGH is a risky method that, to me, isn't worth it when the software exploit can do almost all that an RGH console can.
Every now and then I see posts on reddit about RGH consoles having one problem or another. Usually not booting because modifying the nand is breaking the proper signature(s).

RGH is good if using a large non original sata drive and you don't have a 4GB mmu or you are using an old dashboard like blades. I've got 2 xbox360's, first one is a fat with just a wire and diode installed and I've never had an issue with it, the other is a slim with demon dual nand and coolrunner and never had an issue with that either, but for folks that don't want to open their 360 or solder anything then this new mod is excellent news.

Happy to report that ABadAvatar (the latest, 1.3) finally works on my console. ^^ Not sure why the previous versions didn't work. It could be that my USB drive was faulty back then but that doesn't explain why ABadUpdate was working instead. Anyway, I picked up a new USB drive, set it up with the BadBuilder app and used XeUnshackle Max instead of the default one in order to disable the splash screen and skip to Aurora after jailbreak. Now I just need to see what else I need of those homebrew apps and, once done, move everything to the HDD and ditch the USB drive altogether.

From what I've seen, the only downside to using ABadAvatar is that you need to unplug the Kinect in order to have a better success rate.

Other than those homebrew apps that are included, what else should I add to my setup?

I don't khow what apps you have installed but you should install nand flasher and dump the nand and cpu/dvd keys and store those in a safe place at the very least.

You probably also want to install something to unlock demo/trial games like XM360.

I would advise against xm360. Any games on the console will also be patched so they wont work unless an exploit is active. Aurora has options to unlock trial games but I think it's only temporary which is still better than signature breaking.

I've got a slim using dual (demon) nand setup and coolrunner. The patched games work on both and still show trial on original nand when not glitched, I'll recheck though to make sure, but I never use retail now anymore since the shop got closed a few years back so all my trials/demos are from archive sites and I will never pay for xbox live (is that even stil working for 360).

Re4 bought from Xbox Live was signed to my older 360 and after xm360 ran the game would no longer boot saying it was corrupted without an exploit. Thankfully I had backed it up way before that.

Also, if you set value at address 0x237 to 0x01 on a trial game using a hex editor it will unlock it. If I had known this back then I could have fixed it after copying it back to usb.

Can't you just do that on the 360 already - reset a games offset? If not I might make a little app/plugin for the 360 and PC to do it as it's basic stuff.

According to AI there's some PC apps to do it:
  1. Transfer the modified file over to your PC via FTP or USB.
  2. Open the file in a program like Velocity or Lefluffie (STFS package managers). https://gbatemp.net/download/le-fluffie.28975/
  3. These programs have a dedicated "License" tab where you can see the active flags. Change the license type dropdown back to "Trial" or "Media Flags restricted", which automatically sets the correct header bytes (like changing 0x0 back to 0x1).
  4. Re-sign and Re-hash the file inside the tool (this recalculates the SHA-1 hashes of the header so the console doesn't read it as a corrupted file).
  5. Transfer it back to your console.
Note: If you run an edited file without re-signing/re-hashing it, a standard dashboard might flag the file as corrupted unless you have signpatch enabled in DashLaunch.
