Hacking New to This

Exactly how does it work? Is this right?

1. Insert the microSD into the R4 then plug it into the computer with the adapter
2. Then you go to the website and download the latest firmware and drag and drop into the microSD card
3. Download the roms, homebrew games, applications, etc
4. Drag and drop into the microSD card
5. After that insert R4 into the DS
6. Find the rom you want to run and select it to play

Is that correct? Is it that simple?

Also another question
To play music and videos do I have to convert them into a different file? Or can I just drag and drop and play them on the ds straight away?

THANKS 4 THE HELP!

1) Download the firmware and whatever games you want to play.
2) Insert the microSD card into the card reader, then plug the card reader into a USB port on your computer.
3) Drop the firmware & games onto the card.
4) Put the microSD card into the R4, and the R4 into the DS.
5) Play games.

You can only play video that's in dpg format. Audio has to be mp3 or ogg.

You know when you say drop the firmware & games onto the card, do you mean you just drag the files you downloaded and drop it into the card? So there is no need to convert the games into a specific format?

There is no conversion of formats, but you do need to extract the files from the .zip, .rar or .7z file that you downloaded them in.

Okay, since there seem to be some folks out there who are nervous about the whole upgrading thing I thought I'd chip in with my very recent experience on the matter. I got my R4DS this week and promptly proceeded to upgrade to the latest version of both the kernel and moonshell. This is done by:
1) Downloading both from www.r4ds.net.
2) Unpack both archives.
3) Use Explorer (on WinXP or similar) or Finder (OSX) to transfer the files onto the microSD card, using the accompanying microSD reader/writer. Check the instructions on the mini-CD you got with the R4DS for what files to transfer.
4) Finished!

It's really extremely convenient and the risk for f*king up is close to infinitely small. The important thing to remeber is that the R4DS is utilising a KERNEL - that is, it's using i very, very small operating system that's loaded into memory. If I'm not entierly out there you don't upgrade any firmware per se when loading the kernel onto the microSD card.
