So I saw somewhere someone saying that whenever you buy a new card you should reformat it using a SDformatter or some program named similarly before you start using it with your 3DS because otherwise it could do damage to the reader and stuffs.

Is this true? Should I? If yes, how do I do it?

Edit:
So here's the deal:
My computer doesn't have a place to put the SD Card in, but someone in my family has a Samsung Galaxy 3 - will it be possible to format the card by putting it in the smartphone and plugging it into the computer? BUT I just realized those phone use Micro SD and not normal sized ones... So is there any other way I can do this?

Depends, if its a new card just format it to FAT32 on your computer, insert it on your 3DS and you're good to go.

I personally don't know of any damage formatting from not using SDformatter. Its a 3DS, not a NASA computer. Its not picky on what you used to format. Just format it to FAT32, or just let your 3DS handle the formatting.

3DS doesn't format SD cards.
Really? I believe you, I'm not quite sure if it does or doesn't or ever did; but I could have sworn 2 and a half years ago it couldn't read my SD card and a prompt came up offering to format it.

Unless you have a card reader, no.

Like the title says:
Does it matter if you format an SD card before use by putting it in your 3DS & plugging to your PC?

Cause I'm not sure I got a SD reader

A digital camera or anything that reads SD cards that can connect to the computer will work

I don't have anything, except the 3DS I'll get.
Can I plug it in the 3DS and then plug the 3DS in the computer and format it?
Or is that like unsafe or shortens the reader's timespan on the 3DS end

You cannot connect the 3DS to the computer, just format the card normally through the computer in FAT32, only if its a new card, if its a really old card, I suggest you format using SDFormatter.
