Except this time you don't have to solder on test pads/legs, because it intercepts the data straight from the cable and sends the "modded" data directly to the Drive controller.
This should be 6x, seeing it's a modchip.
About the question "why only now", well, the Wii modchip market isn't exactly known for their competing research teams. Remember the Wasabi?
It was the first "All-in-one" modchip, which used a new and revolutionary few wires technology. It got cloned in weeks. This seems the same thing. Someone got the idea and it quickly got copied (or it was actually sold to more than one team?).
BTW, this thing should be from Team Wiikey/D2C.

I don't know how other modchips work but this kind of things can intercept the data and change it on the way... I don't think it's the case for board+drive chip soldered modchips...![]()

Well isn't it easier just to patch the drive commands to the ones that are used for movie dvd reading? (no drive code bashing) I'm just questioning...

This is different - to the best of my knowledge FlatMii doesn't allow you to use burned discs in the drive itself (although I suppose a firmware update could change that). The passthrough mode basically just means it doesn't do anything so that the drive works as normal - unmodified. The only way you can play backup games with a FlatMii is from a computer over USB.
I suspect Drivekey has been announced early because FlatMii beat them to market.
