It'd be cool if a chip could do what this does and what flatmii does... then you'd have usb and dvd loading in one.
 
I just wish this could be 6x though.

So what are the chances of Nintendo removing the DVD mode from the drive in the next drive revision (that is if this chip really does use the DVD bug)?

Why should they be using the Movie DVD Support bug? This is exactly like a modchip, no more no less.

Except this time you don't have to solder on test pads/legs, because it intercepts the data straight from the cable and sends the "modded" data directly to the Drive controller.

This should be 6x, seeing it's a modchip.

About the question "why only now", well, the Wii modchip market isn't exactly known for their competing research teams. Remember the Wasabi?
It was the first "All-in-one" modchip, which used a new and revolutionary few wires technology. It got cloned in weeks. This seems the same thing. Someone got the idea and it quickly got copied (or it was actually sold to more than one team?).

BTW, this thing should be from Team Wiikey/D2C.

Why should they be using the Movie DVD Support bug? This is exactly like a modchip, no more no less.

I don't know how other modchips work but this kind of things can intercept the data and change it on the way... I don't think it's the case for board+drive chip soldered modchips...

Well isn't it easier just to patch the drive commands to the ones that are used for movie dvd reading? (no drive code bashing) I'm just questioning...

Well no, if you're using a modchip, why use the drive commands for movie dvd reading which are limited to 3x when you can use the debug commands which can get you the full 6x speed?

Those debug commands cannot be used without a modchip, and that's also the reason why a 6x softmod is a difficult feat.
IIRC, if you try to use them, Hollywood just blocks them and sends garbage to the Drive controller.

The reason slowking gave at wiinewz is that you can't patch the drive through the dataline.

That could be plausible, but if that was the case, it'd entirely defeat the purpose of those modchips.

No one would buy these, if they just have similiar performances to the Softmods, being limited to 3x.

But think about the FlatMii. It does the same thing the Wii DVD Drive Serial Tool ISO Loader did.
And the good ol' Wii DVD Drive Serial tool had to be soldered on the test pads commonly used for DMS/D2A/D2B modchips.

Sooo... that means they're somehow accessible thru the dataline, simple as that.

WiiKey1 worked great at 3x, and this should too. Hm, let's hope it's cheap

This is different - to the best of my knowledge FlatMii doesn't allow you to use burned discs in the drive itself (although I suppose a firmware update could change that). The passthrough mode basically just means it doesn't do anything so that the drive works as normal - unmodified. The only way you can play backup games with a FlatMii is from a computer over USB.

I suspect Drivekey has been announced early because FlatMii beat them to market.
 
Yeah, that's what I said later on in this thread. They both do about the same thing though. They intercept the drive commands on the ribbon cable and replace them with other commands. In the case of the FLATMII it relies on PC software to fully emulate a drive and pass the information back. In the case of the DriveKey it replaces them with drive commands going to an original drive and then replaces the responses coming back from the drive as well. That's why I can't believe the FLATMII people didn't have the vision to make their device do both. In passthrough mode it just sits there. I hope the FLATMII chip is updatable as well, or a FLATMII2 should be quickly in the works.

Yes, but it loads discs at 3x, so unless it's significantly cheaper than a regular modchip I expect it's sales to be lower.
 
I have my YAOSM set to 3x to reduce the noise, and have never experienced any stuttering video or something like that. The whole 3x-story is based the fact that the early backup-loaders were not as advanced coded as they are now, causing longer load-times. The fact that it loads at 3x is barely (or not at all?) noticeable. If it acts as a real mod-chip, it will have 'perfect' code, thus have barely (or not at all) noticeable slowdown.
