Hacking new modchip not from ninja team

I'll get one of these chips once they figure out how to bypass the whole region issue. I couldn't give a Wanque about most of the Wii games anyway.

until there is no word about a chip that allows to play other region games... these modchips are kinda useless... one is enough.

Are they tricking the board into thinking the security code matches, or are they tricking the DVD drive into not bothering to look for a security code?

Close, it doesn't have anything to do with security codes, more like it just makes the drive read anything in there. So just like how you have to modify or enable the debug mode on a PC DVD drive in order to read Wii disks to dump them, you need to do the same thing to the Wii drive to make it read non Wii disks. Get it?

In terms of function, I suppose there's little point in there being a whole load of chips that all do the same thing; the advantage to the consumer would be the price drop that would probably be the result.

I never soldered, but from a common sense point: Let's assume I want to get rid of a chip and solder it using wires. If I cut all the wires there will be absolutely no difference to the Wii "before modding" right? Or could "what is left of the solder material" change the Wii behaviour so it doesn't work.?!?

As long as you close the ends of the wire with electrical tape so that you don't have an accidental touch from the other end of the wire, yeah, snipping the old modchip off with a pair of wire cutters will do the same thing as removing the wires from the solder point.

Well people who has a XenoGC will be comfortable with the no wires deal and be right at home here..

I used wires when I installed a XenoGC. I just wasn't comfortable attaching the board with only solder to my mates GC. The wire install was easy and works well to this day.

It seems most professionals prefer wires.

I'd prefer them too just because it's easier to remove.

I'm still gonna wait for reviews on the gen1 wii chips. It doesn't help that the CycloWiz looks like an xbox 1.6 rebuild which is a scary prospect if you know what I'm talking about. The wiinja looks like my first PS1 chip which will be cheep as hell in a couple of months.

yes it solders directly to the wii's board, which would make it very difficult and dangerous to remove if desired.

and to the other guy, no it will not allow DVD movie playback. simply stating it can read backups off of DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs.
