I've been using CYRI to check if I can run games, and it seems my cpu is bottlenecking my in the "recommended" tab, it usually says "any quad core cpu", and I have a c2d [email protected]. I looked up some benchmarks vs the c2q [email protected], and it said that it only slightly underperforms in single threaded programs, and in multithreaded programs (e.g. most games), it heavily out-performed. So would it be a worthwhile upgrade to buy one? Or would it be better to buy a higher level one?
I can usually find one for about CAD$60~ My budget is around $100.

Gaming is not really multithreading.

Honestly speaking, save up money on total upgrade. Even Pentium G2120 (Ivy Bridge Dual Core) will outperform that Core 2 Duo.

Sometimes that can use all four cores will of course be better on four cores than two, but most games can only use up to three or so threads anyways, with two of those being the heavier ones. Going from Duo to Quad is only going to get a noticeable improvement in gaming if the per-thread performance gets a good boost as well (like when I went from my first-gen duo to my Q8400).

I was also thinking in the future, maybe when Haswell comes out, I could get an 1155/0 i3 with a new board (obv), would that be the best situation in terms of budget intel?
EDIT: I would also be willing to go used with a 2nd gen i3 used.
Sandy Bridge Pentium & Core i3 are pretty darn good for budget gaming, so long as you pair it with a dedicated GPU. Pentium G620+ and Core i3-2100+ are what you looking for in Sandy Bridge.

Haswell is LGA1150, so it uses motherboard that are different than Sandy/Ivy Bridge (LGA1155).

A recommended cheapo board with 4 ram slots?
Why do you need 4 RAM slots? You are in for budget PC are you not? 2 x 4 GB will give you 8 GB while only taking up 2 slots, plenty for you.

You are looking for mATX H77 motherboard. Some H61/H67 motherboards will work too if they come with the latest BIOS.
