I just bought a used "new" 2ds XL with a weird quirk. The listing stated that the system powered on intermittently and when it did power on the buttons were unresponsive. I searched online for a possible explanation before buying the system. I found a bad digitizer could be to blame for the non responsive buttons. I thought maybe a dirty power button could cause intermittent power.
The system arrives and I attempt to power it on. The system boots normally and all buttons work, no problem. After about a minute all the buttons become unresponsive BUT the touch screen and analog sticks all continue to work. I can boot into a game (Super Smash Brother) and all the buttons work, except for the Home button. I play a full round of smash with no problems at all. Something weird is going on here.
I take the back cover off thinking I might see some water damage or hopefully some indication as to what is wrong. It looks perfect. After I disconnect the speakers and rear camera I boot the system back up and it's working perfectly. Clean the camera ribbon contacts and plug it back in and the system has the same behavior as before. I ordered a replacement rear camera module to see if the problem returns.
I never had an issue with the system powering on. It's always worked for me. If the new rear camera module doesn't fix the issue then this system will remain a rear camera-less system (as I'm not going to be doing any component level system repair in an attempt to fix the board). I will update this post when I have results for the camera swap. I just wanted to share my experience so that others with these same symptoms might have an idea of where to look.
