Netflix's 'The Witcher' TV series first official trailer looks fantastic

SyamwCx.png

“There is never a second opportunity to make a first impression.”
― Andrzej Sapkowski, Author of The Witcher series

You've played the games. You've read the books. You... hopefully haven't watched The Hexer. But now it's finally time for us to see Netflix's take on The Witcher. Season 1 of the new series will be 8 episodes long and, as stated by executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, will be heavily based on the Sapkowski books that chronologically take place before the games. The series is set to release later this year.

Having read all but the last two books myself I'm curious as to what you mean by this. Most of the scenes in the trailer I recognize as happening within the first few books. I don't see how you can say at this point that it's throwing the lore out the bin.

Ignoring you asking if I'm "high or something" I respect your opinion. I'm just curious.
Let me tell ya..

For all of the so called supports and "discussion" with the author, this will pretty much become an unfaithful adaptation. A more unfaithful adaptation than even than the Witcher games.
They just slashed off most of the plots from the only other main protagonist in the books: Ciri.

In the books,
- We knew most of her story from her birth to how she was brought by Geralt.
- The story of her becoming a Witcher by the Law of Surprise is the grand pivotal plot in the Sword of Destiny, the reason spans for a few years in the timeline.
- It takes a whole lot of characters just to build her personality, there's all kinds of scenes and gores that builds it. Her saga alone is huge.
- The only character having a first person's perspective in the story other than Geralt, not even Yen, it's always in Geralt's perspective when he's with Yen.

Now she's the edgy teen character, with those obnoxious voice, god I hate those. "I can't do this without you!". A teen Ciri doesn't act like that, maybe a child Ciri, but not as a teenager. Oh well.
There's also the problems with Yen, Triss (others witches). Witches are supposed to live long and are used to sleeping around. Those actress doesn't give that much of that kind of impression, especially Yen. She looks young AF.
Before I'm still hoping this show's gonna work at least for the plot, not anymore. I don't know if it will be that enjoyable for the book readers to watch this.

Still with enough of CGIs and shit, at least newcomers can enjoy something. They would just not learn the true impressions of most of the characters. Basically fucked the books.

I'm not familiar with the books, but please FFS, tell me that isn't Ciri.. Yen's not even a witch yet, just being asked if she wants to be the most powerful ever? How the hell does that happen with Ciri still being a kid?

Yeah, looks like an unfaithful adaptation with random bits of the lore being pulled from the game and books, and we get a shitty pretty Geralt and an obnoxious brat Ciri that probably won't have much of a personality and honestly, looks like one of those bratty kids you just wanna roundhouse kick in Walmart (not advocating this, but we've all had the thought at least).

If someone understands this better than me, will you please let me know what's actually happening here and how it's faithful to the books? I can get over the whole black people thing, that's kind of odd to begin with in regards of there not being any in The Witcher, but I can't get over them shitting all over the story, the feel of the characters and personalities, and more; were they high, or did they just want a shitty CGI ridden GoT ripoff to ride the wave of that ending?

With such a faithful demographic for the books AND the games, they dun goofed on this one, it'll do horrible, flop like all gaming adaptations do, and they'll lose the aspect of free advertising by word of mouth from the fanbase, instead, we'll be metaphorically spraying diarrhea all over it to convince family and friends to not watch that garbage.

Damn looks awesome assuming you're not a pretentious retard trying too hard to sound educated or woke about it.
Sad some people don't understand how to just be entertained by entertainment and instead over-analyse everything into mediocrity.
Will definitely watch.
This !

I liked the trailer, and found it very good visually. Note that I don't know the books, and played only the third game.
I can follow mediocre looking shows like "The outpost", I visually enjoyed "The shannara Chronicles" series, so this is very good in comparison. I'm sure to watch it for what it's intended to.
I just like to enjoy what I watch instead of over analyzing everything.

It's not over-analyzing when you expect the most basic of lore elements to be true to the source material, and that certainly doesn't make someone pretentious or retarded.

This series has a massive amount of interest because of the fanbase that read the books and/or played the games, and there's nothing wrong with wanting it to be true to that source material instead of going completely off the rails and becoming something else entirely with vague similarities.

If they wanted to do something completely off the rails, then they could have gave it a different title other than "The Witcher" because that heavily implies it will mostly remain true to the source material, which is why nerd fandom movie adaptations get so much hate when they utterly fuck it up.

They could have just created an entirely new cast of characters that doesn't focus on Geralt set before the books and games, so they wouldn't have to metaphorically piss and shit all over what it's supposed to be, when it's obvious they're the pretentious retards trying to mooch money from the end of GoT ending and that fanbase trying to find something else with similarish fantasy elements.

People are getting pissed off about this for a reason, and it doesn't take over-analyzing to realize that they've already royally fucked it up, just watching it one time is enough to know that they dun goofed.

Love how that guy simply throws out a bunch of random insults that doesn't in any shape or form have anything to do with the intent behind commenting on the trailer, and is just a bunch of assumptions in regards of someone's character defects and more than likely is due to some type of insecurity in regards of how the person you're quoting views themselves, man, projection is neat.

I probably wasn't the person you wanted to quote, but that's fine :P
I understand that fan can be annoyed if the element are wrong, the story different, characters completely different/new/missing.
I think the issue we talked about with Hells Malice is more visually (FX, CGI) "the eye color is so badly done, I won't ever watch that series !". whhhat?

but for all the other changed element from the story itself, and not how it's done, I really understand.

edit: Like I said above, I don't know the book or all the games either. it'll be new to me and won't be a comparison. maybe people could see it the same way. like a lot of remake of remake actually. just enjoy the remake, don't compare. (there are a new kingkong every 10 year, every time different, based on new director's view and the way HE wants it to look).

@MagnesG perfectly resumed my problem with this Witcher adaptation.

That being said, even though raping the books and their content has been mainstream since the dawn of movies for the obvious reason that the first movies couldn't afford to respect books by the letter since "it's a different media" (and internal monologues and narration tend to bore the viewer), we live in an era where technology is developped enough to allow creators to respect a story and adapt it faithfully instead of raping it to earn brownie points or, to quote them, to "bring a new vision of something everyone already knows".

It sometimes is the case and brought some interesting changes to already popular franchises that actually made them interesting to watch thanks to the differences, but it mostly is an excuse to hide lack of creativity, funds or will to adapt something as it is.

the person you're quoting

I was too lazy to go back and reply to that guy specifically, and it helps because I didn't want to immediately have them get a notification in regards to them being replied to so I could hopefully delay reading a smartass reply if that post is anything worth using to ascertain their type of retort.

I'm personally chill with the CGI, it doesn't have to be perfect, it's a Netflix adaptation FFS and like a lot of stuff from Netflix, it's not going to be top notch most of the time.

I personally hope that through word of mouth, people will avoid this series like the plague, because in my honest opinion, it's not acceptable to normalize and provide incentive for companies/corporations to spew shit from their asses all over the source material for the sake of $$$ in a vain attempt to entice fanbases from other shows that are out there.

That's just my personal opinion, if you want to enjoy it, that's okay, more power to you, but I feel that because there are people that don't have a comparison to go by, it makes it seem acceptable to utterly create something totally different from the series of books and games it's supposed to be an adaptation of to begin with.

I can't even look at that pretty boy Geralt and accept him as being the Geralt many of us know and love, our Geralt is a bit gruff, busted up from all the combat he's been through, and as a stronger and not so delicate looking chin.

If that's supposed to be Ciri, then wow, they really ruined her character more so than any other, and she's supposed to be one of the main characters that the story heavily relies on; instead, she looks like this overly sensitive pouty brat that can jump off a cliff for all I care, and I'd probably be put off by her character even without a comparison, because she looks/sounds annoying as fuck.

Yen isn't even Yen, and it's like she's being made into a witch to be the most powerful witch ever, what the hell is with that bullshit?

There's a lot of stuff in that trailer that will make the existing fanbase absolutely FURIOUS and you can be guaranteed that this will be one series that a lot of people will shit on since an overwhelming number of people actually played the games. There's a reason it's on the popular platforms for quality (graphics, I'm not shitting on Nintendo, I actually love the Wii and Switch) gaming, and hell, they even went out of their way to create one of the best ports to the Xbox 360 for The Witcher 2 that was ever done for the console, because even the graphics quality is surprisingly well fucking done in regards of how well the game actually runs for having been ported from a high quality (at the time) PC game to the 360, and that release was fairly popular as far as I'm aware which lead to a lot of people buying The Witcher 3 for consoles when it came out. It's a shame that due to the controls, it would have been less and desirable to port the original Witcher game to console, and the voice acting and graphics are crude and don't hold up very well; hell, the voice acting was pretty damn bad even by that era's standards, and the enhanced patch made a lot of changes in that respect and more.

Anyways, this isn't what we expected, because with the reputation that series of games has in regards of the developers doing right by their fanbase over and over again and going above and beyond to provide quality content even after the game is released, we expect that same respect and passion to have carried over to the adaptation, even if the developers have nothing to do with the Netflix adaptation.

This is a surefire way to put off a sizable portion of the people that were going to watch it, and some people may watch a few episodes only to stop watching it because it's so far off, but I'm not arrogant enough to believe that some of the fans won't enjoy it, and that normies won't enjoy it. I just hope that the number of people that enjoy that trash is not that they had hoped for and it gets canned for being garbage because it isn't The Witcher at all.

EDIT: Corrected a sentence because I put a word in there by accident that changed the meaning of what I had intended to construe in my post.

Looks like a very good and interesting adaptation. If you're looking for a carbon copy of the book... just read the book. I have, multiple times, and I didn't see anything particularly offensive. As for the "two swords" confusion, Geralt only carried one, the appropriate one for the fight ahead. Silver is soft, expensive and not worth chipping or breaking if it's not required. The silver sword was usually strapped to the saddle and was only ever pulled out against monsters susceptible to the effects of silver. The games allowed you to carry two for convenience, they weren't consistent with the source material, it's sort of how adaptations work. :P

The CGI looks a little plastic but the number of people in those mass battle scenes gives me hope.
Also I love Henry Cavill :shy:
