There's a good chance it's unhackable. If you're doing everything correctly, nothing works, and you bought it brand new a week ago, then yeah... there's a pretty good chance you're screwed.

Only if he hasnt kept the recepit =)

Say it was a gift and you already had one or something, then go buy a used one with CFW already installed, or try another retailer.

That's not possible. Even if he has the receipt, the store won't give him his money back, they'll give him store credit. That means he can't buy a used one or one that already has CFW. If he returns it, he's either gonna have to buy something else, or buy another PSP and hope that it doesn't have the new motherboard.

He could return for store credit to buy one of the limited edition ones that are hackable (the Target near my house has these so I'm under the assumption your Target carries them, too, possibly in bundle form).

Alright I'm gonna try returning it for store credit. There's still one problem though. I tried hardmodding the battery. It works fine, but it is kind of falling apart. Should I say it was like that when I bought it and use it as a reason for a refund?

Try Wal-mart. They will refund ALMOST anything from what I've experienced, I'm not so sure about consoles or games, but you can try. My friend said he was able to refund his DS from Wal-mart.

The fourth number is a region code. It is NOT a version number.

yes i realise this but the 3.90 was a more recent firmware one of the lasts ones before the infamous 4.01 (ta088 version 3 motherboard) wasn't it?
what's the firmware on there that might give more of an idea?

I already tried that method. It didn't work.
And I have 4.01 firmware, although I think one of the methods I tried updated it. I could have sworn I had 3.80.

try this because i went armed with all this informwation to make sure i didn't get stuck with the ta-088 v3
i'm sure you're missing something from the tutorial

when you made the mms did you see this as the last line of the method i gave you

*The last line should say " Write MS BOOT CODE "

if you did you got the mms bit right and there must be another problem

Here's what I've learned from my many unsuccessful attempts at trying to hack my PSP.

If you have OFW 4.01 or above, it is VERY likely you have the new motherboard that you can't hack. In this case, I would recommend returning the product if you can and getting a Limited Edition one (except for the new PSP 3000 which is silver and is the Ratchet bundle). I believe most of the Limited Edition ones come pre-installed with older firmwares, most of them being 3.90 or 3.95? I think most of these are pretty much guaranteed hackable? And avoid the Madden ones, I think some of the new ones come with the new motherboard.

Also, if you're usin Vista, you may have the same problem I am, which is the MMS maker is unable to inject IPL. I am not sure what this means in techy terms, but I think this is essential to having your MMS properly work, otherwise it won't load Pandora.

Anyways, I'm still a noob at this. I mean, I haven't even able to hack my PSP with all these guides in my face. It's really giving me a headache and my eyeballs are about to fall out from reading all this crap. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

Good luck.

You're not wrong. Vista just sucks.

When the MMS maker injects the IPL, it tries to shift the entire partition on the MS to to right, making a small gap in the beginning of the MS. It then tries to put a hidden partition there (the IPL) which is needed to flash the PSP.

It's like putting jam in a donut. Pandora uses the jam to give you CFW.
