    Hi all,
After getting my 2ds xl I decided that 5 hours on Mario Maker just isn't enough play time. I looked around and saw a DIY 3ds xl charge grip which is the way I've decided to go.
I purchased Anker's Powercore+ Mini and I have a USB cable on the way. I also just happen to have a 3d printer and be proficient in computer aided design.

I don't have a grip on hand and would like suggestions on where to embed the power bank from those who have used one. For reference, the power bank is about 20mm in diameter and 100mm tall. Also note that it has a button next to the USB port which must be pushed before charging will start, so there has to be some way to do this.

I'm also trying to leave space for a possible future addition of a bluetooth audio transmitter, though this is not mandatory.

New 2ds XL battery upgrade [post #2]
    • Is there a battery upgrade for the "New 3ds"??
    • Charging directly 3ds without battery? (see the Ghetto battery mod).

    Internal battery
Take a pre-existing n2DSXL hand grip like one of these.
Fit cylindrical batteries within the palm sections or flat batteries in center. As an example, see the teardown pictures for the n3DSXL MHXX handgrip in the spoilers of this post.

    Thank you TurdPooCharger.
Sadly, the powerbank is beyond a doubt too large to fit in one of the handles. I'm trying to decide where to put it at this point so any help is appreciated.
I'm wondering if you read through my post though, as I stated that I would be 3d printing the grip and you then directed me to Amazon to buy one.

I'm skeptical of the feasibility creating a usable, quality hand grip made in 3D printing that's not for the purpose of rapid prototyping.

If you're going to 3D print a hand grip, you might want to add enough tolerance for wet sanding and then coating the surface with a better texture.
It's hard to beat the feel of blow molded ABS plastic, so heads up in case results falls short of your expectation.

There's also the issue of durability. You could try printing a thicker walled hand grip for better daily wear and tear (resist cracking), but it may end up weighing more than the publicly sold grips.

I'll be printing the grip in an impact-resistant material known as PETG. I won't have any trouble making it smooth either, since I'll be printing with a layer height of 0.05 mm. In contrast, most libraries and on-demand services print at 0.2mm.
I'm thinking about mounting the powerbank in the center of the grip, with a kickstand that swings down to reveal the charging button. I'm wondering about balance though as the powerbank is quite heavy. Any suggestions there?

Even 0.05mm won't make it smooth unless you're using a resin printer.

For my purposes it will be good enough. However, I'm also considering printing in ABS and then using vapor smoothing, which gives it a glossy look and the texture of injection molded plastic. I may do this once I've got everything finished in terms of prototyping and the design in the bag.
