Gaming Need an Excuse

I busted my Wii Drive trying to mod it, so I need a new drive.

Now there is no problem ordering a new one from Nintendo, but they'll probably ask why I just don't make use of the warranty and I rather not tell them it's because I tried modding my Wii

So why would I open my Wii, foiding my warranty, and how did I get the drive busted?

I seriously doubt they'll sell you just a part. You're going to have to send it in for warranty.

Nintendo doesn't mail parts, it goes in and you pay because you decided to screw up your warranty risking the piracy game.

Now one thing I'm curious about, would they upon inspection seeing you did that just mail it back and tell you to buy another one. I would.

as far as nintendo ds was concerned, they didnt give it a second look, although flashme was installed thus voiding the warranty, but i received a brand new unit

Well here in the Netherlands they actually do. I ordered a few SNES parts some years ago, which came thru the mail. It might have changed, but I doubt it.

Well in the NA region they'll only mail out exterior cosmetic type parts or missing pieces, but anything you'd have to unscrew the unit for...forget it. Anything like a Wii they'd boot up, see it didn't work, then start internal tests...see the damage and it would be their call to fix at a cost or say buy another.

depending how spiteful you are you can do this

buy a second wii
swap drive
return new wii (with your old swapped bad drive now in it) as defective

a friend had to do this when his wiikey burned out and pulled a soldering pad with it upon removal (chips can aparntly be hold a grudge if you treat them badly! lol)

doubt they will mail just the parts also, you could try getting it repaired 3rd party. how bad is the damage? did you get mad because you cant install it and stabbed it with a screwdriver or throw it across the room? i think most damage done by bad solder job can be easily repaired (Most is the key word). missing/broken parts could be repaired if you knew what they were, pcb also can be repaired. think only 1 unrepairable wii system i saw was someone burning their panasonic chip by hooking the cyclowiz switch wrong, but if the part was available it could easily be replaced.

Why would I be misleading them or be guilty of fraud? I just want to buy (as in pay with legal currency) a new drive from them.

About the Damage: I lost a solder pad, so I wanted to solder directly on the Chip which i traced the pad back to, but I accidently lifted a leg

Precisely, as long as you're not trying to get your warranty to cover the repair I don't get why it would be a big deal.

Just an update:

After seeing the pictures of the new Japanese Wii Board I got pretty confident that I would be able to get my Wii to work, since in the picture of that new board 3 pins were missing. One of them was the one I busted. So yesterday I removed the Wiikey, all the solder between the IC's legs and cleaned things up. Put the Wii back together again and powered it up....

And just as I hoped it works fine

So now I got a perfectly good Wii which just can't be modded

Well I would do this as Nintendo charged us UK gamers way too much for our SNES and N64 games.

i would reccomend buying a new 1 from wherever u got it from and then do a box swap, but mae sure when u swap the boxes that you also swap the bottops, only because they wil check the serial numbers
