As the title says really. I currently have a 3ds XL (running 4.5) with a r4i gold deluxe edition.

Do I need to do backup? What does it do?

NAND is the internal memory of the 3DS. It only needs to be backed up if you plan on doing something risky.
Thats all you need to know.

NAND - Stores 3DS System Firmware(software). Eshop Purchase Tickets etc I needs to be backed up especially at 4.x as its the only exploitable firmware on the 3DS

If you back it up, you can restore it if something went wrong.
