Hacking NAND Backup before configuring the 3DS

Hy there i've a question that bothers me because i want to by another 3DS for playing around with CFW and DEV titles. When i bought it and DONT turn it on could i make a hardmod and save my NAND to my PC before turning it on and make the first configuration? Or do i have to make the first configuration of the 3DS because the NAND will be not "ready" or unusable afterwards?

Hm. Just guessing. However, the nand should be accessible even before the customers first boot. I would assume that the nand is necessary for it to even boot at all. It's not like it creates the nand after the initial setup.

But is it a usable NAND for putting it back on the 3DS?
Or is it CRAP without the first configuration?

I assume it's usable. It's just at the state before the initial configuration. So, when you restore it, it'd be like a first time setup.
