Apple my Ipod won't boot anymore

I didn't checked all other topics, maybe it's already covered.


my Ipod (5.5, rockboxed), worked fine for two or three years.
recently it fall down from the same height than a bed/chair.
All seemed to work fine.

But since then, it auto-shutdown while playing music (seems like it shutdown when accessing the disc, once it's cached it doesn't shut down).
I thought it could be a HDD problem, or the battery which lost connexions. But I can reboot it just after it shutdown, so I don't think it's the battery.

And today it doesn't even boot anymore.
Any pressed button does nothing.
Connecting to USB does nothing either.
BUT connecting to FireWire works! (but as soon as I disconnect it, it shut down).
It also works fine in Ipod original firmware, but as soon as I disconnect it, it shut down too.

How comes USB can't power it but Firewire can?
The Apple connector doesn't provide power from the same pins?
The FireWire connection does the same thing as connecting the Ipod on the external Power supply.
So, it looks to me that the battery is connected to the same pins than the USB are using, and the pins may be broken internally? unsoldered maybe.


I can't transfer files from FireWire, I can only charge it. the battery is 100% charged, and seen correctly, there's no problem detecting the battery. I checked few debug menu from Rockbox, but everything works fine.

I can use the device without problem when it's connected to FireWire, but I need it in USB/portable mode.



Do you think it could be the HDD? (it works fine in firewire)
The battery? (it's fully charged and detected fine)
the buttons? (they work fine in firewire too)

I don't know how to open it and check if there's any physical damages due to the fall (unsoldered point, broken cable, etc.)
And I'm afraid that opening it will deform the case.
What do you think I can do?
Buy a new one?
It's hard to find an Ipod 5.5 80GB (I need rockbox, I can't live with the default apple firmware, that's just horrible to browse music)

no clicking noise at all.
It works fine, I even run checkdisk when USB was still working (few days ago). and nothing were wrong.

It's just the Ipod which shut down (it does that since a month).
today it stays in shut-down state.

I think it's related to power supply, as it doesn't boot unless I connect it to external power source.
but like I said, once connected to firewire, it detects the battery without problem, (rockbox diagnostics are fine)

I've read a website recommending: "let it discharging".

My ipod was connected to PS3 for few days, maybe it was too many charged?

I can't do the first step : Reset your iPod. To do this, hold the center and menu buttons until you see the Apple logo.

it doesn't power on at all.
holding it doesn't show the logo.

I'll try while it's connected to firewire. ok, it worked!
I'm testing all the menus. (I'll try a reset in last resort)

I run all diagnostics, they are always saying "ok" or "pass".
Except the USB which I can't test as it require unplugging the Firewire, which shutdown the Ipod.

I don't want to "reset" it, and I don't think it will be helpful.
It might just rewrite the factory firmware, but it will not help powerON the device.



I guess I will do the only thing left : "let it drain the battery", recommended by Apple.
I can't do much more at this point

I finally ordered a new battery (from ebay), and my Ipod is working again
So, even if the battery was correctly detected, it seems it was dead and unable to boot the device by itself.

The new battery seems to last less longer than the official one (even though it's the same intensity).
But it's better than nothing at all.

If anyone else have the same problem, you will now that replacing the battery fix it.

Lithium ion batteries have a shelf life of about 5 years, over time they'll hold less charge so depending on how long you've had the player for you might find yours was starting to go. Hence why the brand spanking new one lasts longer

it was the contrary
The new one seems to discharge more quickly (but it might be my imagination, being afraid the new one is bad I see it as bad).

the previous/official one was still working fine and had 10h+ play autonomy. (new battery should be 20h+ continuous play, but I didn't do any bench to verify)
