ROM Hack moonshell questions and more

i've seen now a couple of posts about this 'Moonshell' thingy and somehow got it once on my card but nevertheless i somehow don't get what it is all about. what purpose serveres this moonshell? it's not a 'shell' by itselfs but looks like a file browser somehow.

furthermore what kind of homebrew apps that are not games exist so far? i tried googling around but somehow the pages are all out of date often full of 404 links so i lack a bit of 'overview' on this one.
