When someone installed a solderless modchip (wiikey 2) into a wii, can they still safely update regularly to play newer games?

i think your ok for playing your region game but you can't play import anymore ... soo don't upgrade for now

3ds still seems to be an emulation powerhouse with little to counteract it (what are you going to use? A phone... hah). To that end second hand prices are likely to remain for a while -
