So i have this 1TB external drive i mostly use for my consoles
and there is something using 300 gb i can't figure where they are gone
i selected all the files in the root, shows up they are 468GB in total, but the drive shows up as almost full
i have hidden files and operating system files showing up..

it's a single fat32 MBR partition. 32KB cluster if that matters,
size on disk has barely a difference
(note that i use fat32 32kb to make it easier and everything supports it)

A hidden partition would show the total volume being smaller. More likely, something has paged the space on the drive.

Many external drives come with software to enable encrypted or hidden storage. Rather than having something as obvious as as a hidden volume, it just sprinkles its encrypted bits all over the drive as secret data. It’s possible you have one of these (but if you didn’t know about it then maybe not).

It’s also possible that unplugging the drive incorrectly has caused failed writes, leaving orphaned files on your drive. A simple chkdsk will find and fix any errors like these.

It could also be a broken index that hasn’t updated correctly and things there are more (or less) files than there are.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head what could explain this. Anyway, start by running chkdsk on your drive.
