About Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.
Does anyone want to be the test subject?

I'm pretty happy to see Microsoft come out with a free anti-this/that program.

There is a quick review over at arstechnica.com which gave the product some praise.

Uh...it's been out in BETA for a while (I've had it on my PC). It's been tested and the most of the reviews is that it's pretty damn good, especially for being free.

Just installed this on my laptop. I have to say I'm pretty impressed so far from the low resource usage and simple user interface. The real test of course will be if it can pick up malware and viruses. Reviews so far have been good overall.

I'll be sticking to a better AV for my desktop for the time being.

I have a legit version of kaspersky installed on my comp right now, but when the license expires I might switch over to this.

Windows Defender is cack, but people seem to praise this, hmm.

But Avast is treating me very well at the moment anyway, easily better than Norton and F-Secure from my experience.

I've heard a lot about this, and was rather interested when Microsoft said that they were gonna make an independent anti-malware program.

Windows Security Centre and the other bundled freebies are sucky, but so far this has been pretty excellent.
