Hacking micro sd set up for r4 ds

ok so i just got my micro sd (2gb) i bought online and im trying to set it up for my r4 which i havent received since i ordered it. and it says here (http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=41279) that i need to format my MSD to fat (32 or 16)-- is this necessary? if so, how do i format it?

you can use this. and use the format size adjusment off in the options.
