Metroid, or Zero Mission

I would go with Zero Mission. I love the NES, and I love its games, but Metroid is just too... "empty" for me to ever enjoy. I never feel like I'm exploring, as much as I'm simply moving through filler rooms between some fairly insignificant fights or items. The Zero Missions remake gives you a ton of fleshed out gameplay, pathing, and level flow to enjoy in comparison.

Though really, I'd say play maybe ten, twenty minutes of the original, and see how it feels on you. The game doesn't radically change as you progress, so your experience here should indicate what the rest of the game would feel like, and whether you should ditch it for the Zero Missions remake instead.

That's my opinion, at least :)

Glad to see you've made the right choice.

As an added bonus, Zero Mission also comes with the original Metroid (as an unlockable, I believe). So that's pretty nifty.

I think it's actually Metroid Fusion that unlocks the original Metroid, and it unlocks it on Metroid Prime.

Play Zero Mission first.... and then play the original game until you get bored
