why don't you just play the official ?
there's plenty.

metal slug 7 on DS, or you can play every metal slug from the arcade using neoDS

as for contra, you'll get original contra and super C from contra 4 DS

I don't think I've seen any homebrew to be honest.

Well seeing you have the means to play homebrew games, you also have the means to play regular games without buying them. So yeah Metal Gear 7 even though its nowhere near as good as the original games.

There was also "Commando: Steel Disaster", which was sort of the C.O.R.E. back then as in it was delayed a lot of times, people were "desperate" to play it and turned out to be a bit "meh".

And of course Contra 4.

Also as suggested grab NeoDS and play all of the Metal Slug games on that as well as other run and gun style games.

There are also many games like it for Arcade, NES, SNES, Mega Drive which you can get emulators for. For arcade though most games from 1990+ wont work obviously.

Here is a list of emulators: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=31650
Here is more on NeoDS: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=102177

For game suggestions simple type something like "best run and gun games" in google and you'll get some suggestions.
