RealPlayer sucks. Hard. It's worse than QuickTime. If you have to play RealMedia files, just get the codec (Zoom Player has a built in tool to automatically get all the main codecs) and play it with a better player.

I use VLC for general video (like anime eps) and Zoom Player for the high quality stuff (DVDs, BluRays) and anything that doesn't play properly in VLC.

As for why your songs might be "sticking"... could be a few things. Codec issues, player issues, system lag, or file access error (fragmentation or corruption can cause this). If the song plays properly in VLC but not in WMP, it's probably a codec issue. WMP has a lot of codec issues, and that's the reason why WMP Classic + CCCP (codec pack) is the most popular combination.

Just stick to VLC. Plays almost any video format fine for me. One of the best media players out there.

I like media player classic but media players (aside from the likes of VLC which at a cost has things) come more from the codecs they have access to in which case

If you feel like heading down the more interesting path (or have an p4 device or newer doing not a lot) then XBMC is worth a look in http://xbmc.org/download/

Here are some guides stolen from /g/.

As you can see, MPC-HC + CoreACV is a highly recommended combo for video playback of nearly all formats.

I personally recommend foobar2000 due to its low resource usage, helpful community, and the wide variety of mods/skins available for it.

I like BSplayer Pro (even if people call it BScrap). It never failed on me, if you know how to set it up correctly.
I'm using the same codecs that come with CCCP (even before cccp existed), so just install CCCP if you don't know what codec and their setting to use.
BSplayer is said 'incompatible' with cccp, or not supported, but I don't see any problem.

You can install CoreAVC after CCCP (and set priority in BSplayer for x64 to coreAVC instead of FFDshow), it's taking less CPU to decode x64 codecs.
update Matroska de/muxer (I don't know if it's updated in cccp) if you have desync of audio/video/sub.

Edit:
and I really love the way I can control BSplayer with my IR remote as if it was a Media player box

There's a shortcut for everything.

I used to use BSplayer and is the best one.
