I saw this today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_txF7iETX0

Now, I know that since I was young, playing Atari and NES games like tennis and stuff, and now especially since the advent of Wii, older people have said "If you're going to play a tennis game, why don't you learn to play tennis" - insert whatever sport or physical activity in for tennis that you want. Seeing that video above made me finally say the same thing. It's just close enough to the real thing it seems absolutely pointless to do a video game of most of those things. The martial arts thing - you might as well take a Tae Kwon Do class. The Skateboard one - the kid's got a freakin' skateboard already?! just go outside! (maybe in the winter months you can't? I dunno).

It's cool tech, but wow...

So true, but this was Microsoft's dream. To make an inter-active living room. You have to admit, it's pretty cool. I agree with you, though. Also, it probably won't work like it did in the video.

I don't like it for one reason, If I am going to play an epic game like Mass Effect I want to choose what to say, not Natal checking my face and choosing for me...

I know this is just IGN speculating but the only USEFUL thing I saw in there was with Burnout Paradise. I don't want to see Natal being implemented in great RPG's or FPS's because it will either be a gimmick or downright annoying.

It would be good for us northern folk in the winter when its super cold out.

I just find it funny that MS and Sony are now working on some kind of motion control after calling the Wii a gimmick when it came out.

A good point, but the fact that most of those sports require a lot of energy and time to get good. Try playing real tennis. You won't be able to pick up the racket and start playing without having to spend a whole lot of time practicing to be able to hold a decent match against someone. You mentioned skateboarding. That's another real tricky sport and its dangerous too. People who skateboard will love to play skateboarding games using Natal cause they can perform insane tricks that they are still trying to learn at ease; might even motivate them to continue to practice that same trick over and over, or simply occupy them during winter, like you said.

With Natal it allows people who don't have the time and money and just want to get in and play without having to spend years perfecting their technique when they prefer to just get in and play casually.

LOL, good point.

QUOTE(Day By Day @ Jun 10 2009, 07:59 AM) Worry? Yeah right. It's more girls for us, then.

Also very true. Everyone gets a chance at the impossible then.

Just some notes on why it might not be all that bad:

Not everybody has a tennis court near them. It's so much easier, closer and maybe even cheaper (not having to buy tennis clothes, subscription, gear, etc.) People are busy and this way they can play a quick game of tennis without much hassle.

I'm not throwing away your arguments, because playing real-life tennis has a lot of benefits as well (meeting people, possible steady income from becoming a pro, etc.)

But this is just the example of tennis, take the formula 1 driving thingy from the video for instance... There are not a lot of people willing to risk their life, time and money on doing that in real life.

Also, these are just examples of things you CAN do in real life. I'm sure insane space shooters will try to take advantage of this new technology (although I'm wondering if that will improve gameplay controls). That is just impossible. And if you ever played a tony hawk game and compared it to real life skateboarding... 95% of what you get to do is just plain impossible or otherwise insanely risky.

I think your 100% right. The game I always say this for is Guitar Hero. You have these people who can play Throught the Fire and Flames (is that right?) in Expert mode at 100%. If you can take the time to do that, you can play a guitar.

But, I do love the Wii. I use it occasionally, and for fun. As some one said, I don't play tennis, but I can pick up a game and play tennis with my wife who has no idea how to play tennis either. It's not real tennis, but the game itself is fun. If I was to learn enough to barely play tennis it would take a while.

Now if you were a person that practiced some Tennis game at home all the time to become the best video game tennis player in the world, then I would say, your better off playing real tennis.

As for the outside issue. I have been talking to one of my friends about this recently. Kids now a days have scheduled events. Back in my day, if you wanted to play baseball, you can go to the park and there was kids at the park that you can make friends with and play baseball with.

Now a days, you need to belong to little league, or swim team, or dance club, or karate, or all of the above at once. It's all scheduled time. If you go to a park, you won't be able to play baseball because either there are no kids at the park because they are at a planned event, or because the field is being used by baseball little league team.

Ok that is just to good to be true, I know im not old but even i hate this cycle of something new every month, year. best example is cell phones or ipods. my dad told me about this and i didnt belive him, nor do i like the quality of the games i see on that. if you want to see something scary look up "The decline of video gaming" the first episode takes place in 2059 where they have the PS5, metal gear solid 7, and a final fantasy with a roman numeral so long it must be 2million, 800 thousand, and 953. Maybe its just my dads conservitve recycling attitude rubbing off on me. but i hate companies coming out with new consoles, gadgets, whatever, when they can be updated from the inside. now i think im gonna grow up with kids who keep running into walls because the have their vitual reality goggles on. lol if your a good company you dont need to keep coming out with ridiculous new stuff. its called a niche market.... go find one!

Jan777 is right, without a button to push its a sport or its excesize
