I know that tampering with time can cause timed events like virizion to lock up for ~24hours. Perhaps since you used a save with a different time setting it did that lockout.

The save itself doesn't have a time inside of it (afaik). The whole timed events gets disabled from the firmware.

Did you change your date to whatever date virizion is? I don't know if there are dates where there just aren't pokemon there, but I know that virizon is like monday and thursday, I'd suggest setting it forward as opposed to back to thurs

that's how things end up not working for 24 hours...

It disables by setting the raw time of the game (on cartridge or imported (installed) CIA file) to 0/0/2000, at 00:00, and waits for 24:00 hours (until the next midnight (not actual time, but the time according to the 3DS settings)) to restore the system time. Tomodachi Life does it the same way, but Animal Crossing doesn't. Else Animal Crossing would lock people out too, and you had no error in Tomodachi Life, if it didn't do it game side. It doesn't use a battery anymore.
