Was there ever a Mario Kart on the Game Boy or Game Boy Color? I can't find any evidence either or, so...

    Nope.

Mario Kart 7 is the latest installment, so that means there's 7 titles (actually 9) and they are

    Super Mario Kart - SNES
    Mario Kart 64 - N64
Mario Kart Super Circuit - GBA
Mario Kart Double Dash - GameCube
    Mario Kart DS - DS
    Mario Kart Wii - Wii
    Mario Kart 7 - 3DS

But, there are two arcade games in Japan (and other places around the world) of Mario Kart GP (Grand Prix).

Well that's strange. It's like the people working on the series were handheld-prejudiced until the GBA era.

I'd assume it's because of the severe lack of buttons on the gameboy, till the advanced. I can't see the game working very well at all with only two buttons.

I could see it working if they removed the ability to brake.

Two buttons is enough. You could have braking on the down button on the D-pad, items on the up, A for acceleration and B for drifting. And I don't think the Gameboy could handle drifting anyway.

I think the main reason they didn't make a Mario Kart game for the GB is that racing games on the GB looked like this:

    I don't think the GB/GBC was capable of Mode7.

That, or the GBC couldn't really handle something like Mario Kart. Even on the SNES, it was a bit of a powerhouse with everything going on on screen.

Ya, remove an important function in a kart racing game.

If it's that important then the SNES, GBA, DS, and N64 games never made me find a use for it.

That doesn't mean other people don't use it lol. I use it all the time. It's how you don't get hit by blue shells.
