mame rom sets? why are there different ones?

Been tring to figure that out for a while now. Just wondering y there is rom set v 0.124, v 0.125, v 0.126... whats updated in the different versions?

the emulator now supports 4392 unique games and 8604 actual ROM image sets and is growing all the time.

I've been away from it for a while, but yeah, it does get updated fairly often. Usually, you can get ahold of a base set and then find sets that are just updates to what you've got...i.e. only the rom files that are updated/added/different somehow are included, but not the ones that you should already have. Or at least that's how it used to be done

I got one of those rom sets back in the 90's, with around 2000 games on it and a very early version of dos Mame.
Nowadays I just download individual games that I miss, or sometimes some games become incompatible with newer version of Mame and I redownload them.
Yeah I couldn't keep up with a full rom set, I just get what I can on a need to play basis....
