Android Making the leap to ICS

anyone have any reading material before i make the leap and rip my hair making mistakes? i think, from what i've read on the xdadev forums, i want AOKP rom and Icy Glitch v14 kernal.

the only problem i have is that i have only flashed CM7, never changed the kernal before. I'm looking for either someone with experience or someone who can point me to a nice guide or FAQ aboout how to do so.

Oh BTW i have a samsung captivate. I like CM7 but i'm hearing good things about ICS.

I am not the person to be asking about upgrading like that, but I will say that I recently got the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and ICS is amazing. Make sure you download Nova Launcher off of xda, it's a beta launcher replacement for the stock one. Looks very similar, but supports rotation, multiple dock pages, and a widget drawer if rooted. So nice. You won't regret ICS.

Don't get ICS in on your phone its going to be very unstable especially with the specs your phone has. At least wait until CM9 gets officially ported to your phone. ICS really doesn't add more to Android then GB did, its still the same apps, web browser is much more unstable with pinch to zoom, and I just don't like its state right now with CM9. Wait a little longer for CM9 to be polished up.

it seems everyone that is talking about the AOKP rom loves it. I'm sure there are bugs but even my CM7 has issues some times. Well thanks for the answers guys.

I doubt you know how stable the ROM is, if all of the feedback on the ROM is saying it runs great, go for it. Also, the apps are not all the same, they do the same function, but nearly all of them have been updated and are superior to their older versions. I don't know what you're talking about with the web browser being unstable, that's the first I've heard of such a problem, and even if it is messed up, you could download Chrome Beta, which is supposed to be even better than the ICS browser.

Well then let him just try it out himself. I know for sure he won't like it. Anyways make a backup of what you have already with a Nandroid, and then wipe and install.

No you don't. For a start, I'm guessing you don't have the same phone, so you have not even experienced ICS on that phone. Nor will you have experienced the specific ROM he is referring to on said phone (you may have used a version of the ROM for another phone, but not for that one). And on top of all that, there is little to no chance of you accurately predicting the opinion of anyone on anything unless you know that person VERY well. So basically, you cannot know "for sure" that he will not like the ICS ROM.

From my experience I didn't find ICS to really differentiate from GB that much besides the launcher, as he won't get full hardware acceleration anyways for the lack of drivers. Anyways I am more of a sense guy, and like Sense so going to ICS was a downgrade for me pretty much.

Kinda subjective there. Meaning your input is of questionable utility I'm afraid. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean he won't. There are hundreds of people out there who like a vanilla Android experience, rather than a manufacturer customized one. Don't just assume everyone hates standard Android. I, for one, am not a fan of Sense. But that is also irrelevant to the topic.

I've been using ICS as my daily rom for more than a month now on the same phone, and can tell you there is no big issues. The only problem I ever had was battery drain, but that was fixed by flashing back to stock.
Anyway, as for flashing a kernal, it's exactly the same procedure as flashing a ROM in CWM, apart from the fact you don't need to wipe data, just cache and dalvic cache.

@Jakob95 Are you sure your looking at the right phone? The Captivate (Along with the entire Galaxy S line) have had CM9 since development first started. It's also got around 6 other version. As far as unofficial ports go, it's pretty stable.

Ive been using ICS as my daily driver for a good couple of months now (HTC DESIRE HD), and its the best experience ive ever had on a phone.
The ROM im using is updated almost daily and is near perfect, the only bug ive ever experienced is sometimes theres distortion in the photos.

ICS is by far the best operating system ive ever used on a phone. Give it a flash you wont regret it.
And in reply to the chap above who recommended Nova launcher. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah, you knowz it!!!!!

You should tell your friend to flash a more recent ICS ROM if he hasn't already Team ICSSGS ROM for example has everything working smoothly now.

AOKP is currently on my Vibrant. Smooth as hell. There's a few bugs here and there, but overall, it's damn good.

I personally own an Epic 4G Touch, and it seems that alot of people were having issues, even hardbricking their devices. I'm just waiting for the ICS version of MIUI, it should be alot more stable, and it shouldn't be as buggy, they've been testing it for a few days now. As for ICS itself, some people like it, some people absolutely hate it, I'm just a bit curious.

well i just got a new tablet that has ICS on it so I get to try it first before i go for it on my phone!

Gotta say I do love it. It's nicer all around, but not a major leap from the user standpoint, most likely big improvements behind the scenes i imagine.
