    does anyone know if the m3ds real flash cart works on the 3ds or does it need an upgrade

    M3DS real does not work on 3DS and will never work.

    If you like the "M3" style, get an M3i Zero, it's compatible with 3DS.

    The "3DS" in M3DS doesn't mean it's compatible with the 3DS, its just a coincidence.

    If a card doesn't work on a DSi, then it won't work on the 3DS, also I would suggest investing in a better card like an Acekard 2i or a Supercard Two.
