Gaming Lowering resolution for gaming - Significant change?

I checked back and forth between my old monitor and my new one and I really couldn't see a difference in the games graphically. So what exactly is the reason to go with a larger resolution over a smaller one, as far as gaming is concerned?

Future proofing? Your games now might not benefit from it, but a few years down the road they probably will. Of course, you'll probably need to upgrade the rest of your system by that point, but that's how it goes.

I just remembered a good example of a game that really benefits from higher resolution. Left 4 Dead. Try playing it at lowest resolution, then again at maximum. See how much of an improvement there is.
