hey all I have a quick hardware question if this is the wrong section I am sorry.

I had a friend bring me there 360 to see if I could fix it well unfortunately I am not up on xbox repair I have cleaned the drive to see if it helps but no luck when a disc is placed in the drive it spins up about 1 sec then stops the laser moves back and fourth about 1/4 of an inch and that is it.

Any ideas?

I'd say replace the drives power cable.
Then replace the laser and if that doesn't work, replace the drive (just desolder your original PCB from the dead drive and solder it on the new drive or flash the drive keys to the new drive).

just so I understand you mean the cable that goes from the drive to the MB? or an internal one?

ok I don't have a spare so I ohmed it you with my Multimeter and it is reading fine

Before replacing I had the same issue just a few weeks ago, I would put in a disc and it would spin the disc about 1 full turn then stop and it would just say "open tray". Fixed it by taking alcohol and a cotton ball and cleaning the wheel that spins the disc but press firmly on the side and spinning the wheel with my finger. The cotton ball had lots of dust and a glue like substance that I could not see. After doing that the Xbox read discs like new.
