We'll still have to wait on an actual remake, but I found this to be interesting nonetheless.

Final Fantasy is a series I've never fully understood. The name alone conjures up images of mistranslations and poorly made jokes that twelve year old me could barely even witticise. The developer Yoshinori Kitase has said that he would be tempted to switch things up, "delete things" and add "new elements."

The Final Fantasy VII director and scenario planner has talked about how the potential remake would be doable. He said that if he was to speak as a "game creator", he would be really tempted to change things and add "new systems" because if they remade it now, "it'd be like a repeat."

I always feel like Nintendo has the market cornered on the nostalgic sector and that Final Fantasy is one of those things that people will insist on asking when they'd probably get the same feeling from tossing themselves down the stairs and being picked up by a pretty nurse. It's the nostalgic factor of being young and empathising with the emotionally decaying Cloud and the comradery felt from the party you were with. It was a good game, I'm not gonna deny that, but Kitase is setting himself up for failure if he makes the game.

Kitase himself ackowledges this by saying that if they remade the game, "the fans might be disappointed or 'this is not what I was expecting', so in that sense maybe some might say that it's better to let memory be memory." Kitase is not stupid and he knows that it'd be incredibly financially viable, as most nostalgic properties are...I guess if they remade it, I already could guess the backlash and at least Kitase putting forward the idea of retooling it, to not "repeat" the same game.

I like that he realizes that making a remake will generate incredibly high expectation compared to the original, but yet wants to make something 'new' with it rather than just rehash the old stuff. That's probably like how they handled FF4DS with augments and other tweaks with the abilities, or FF3's changes to the job swapping and added character personalities.

I agree completely on that too. I remember making the comment that a FF7 alone wouldn't make me buy a PS3 (when it was 700$), but if they gave it enough changes it would. I wouldn't want them to just slap the game with a new skin. I know they did that with FF4 PSP essentially speaking, but they also added The After Years, and that 'bundle' didn't cost a whole lot overall compared to other PSP games.

That said, if they just updated the 'skin', I'd probably buy it NOW because I already own a PS3. I think my original comment was in regards that 'it would sell PS3 units if they did' in past discussions, when the price tag was so high on the console. I'd buy it because I'd like to see how the characters look, how the battles flow, and generally speaking how much more cinematic they could make it feel when it used to be FMVs. The PS3 can make far superior graphics in real time than what they did in FMVs back then.

What I'd like to see is how they integrate Yuffie and Vincent in the story, seeing as they were optional characters in the original.
