Square/Enix did kind of stupid copy protection imo. Stupid stupid stupid copy protection. Copy protection should be sneaky and hard to fix.
Rather than flashing that Moogle screen they should have made game crash randomly. That would have made people more annoyed and
would have been harder to track down the fault. Like do that counter thing and find "oh noes it's running on flashcard" and then just crash
game randomly. But they did kind of service to us

Maybe they should have done what Earthbound did.

Increased Monster Spawns and a few other things (including your save game getting wiped).

They could have made bosses Stronger too, and less item drops, maybe made the items bought from shops more expensive to buy, etc.

But apparently Squeenix arn't evil bastards like that.

Those things would have to be subtle to make it harder to find, but if you make it too subtle people will just think the game is bad and not a protection. Earthbound was cracked fine back in the day as well so it still isn't going to be really effective.

If they made the game crash randomly people who were playing pirated copies would say oh this game is bad, it crashes all the time. It happened with a PC game, Titan Quest I think where the made it randomly crash. So people went on the forums saying oh this is a bad game don't buy it, when the game hadn't even been released yet so everyone that was playing was playing the pirated copy. It got a bad reputation because of that.
