Hi
i started to translate Jet Impulse but my japanese knowledge is not really good
wink.gif

Would anyone like to help me translating the script ?

got 2 questions for you.
1: your japanese knowledge, is it just not perfect yet or is it whatever babelfish can translate for you?

2: are you taking the easy or the hard way out with the text?(just editing the text in the .txt's, or also editing pointers, fonts etc.?)

translators/hackers here prefer to know if they can take you seriously or not.
many translations failed just because people didn't know what it takes to start a translation project.

I'd love to see a translation of this, the game is great, but hard to play in Japanese. Best flight game on the ds aswell. And seems we're never getting the English version out.

Hell yeah! I was thinking the same thing a few days ago. While searching DS games I said..."What ever happened to DS Air?!" AKA Jet Impulse. I remember being really excited about it when I heard it was coming out in the US, but that never materialized.
Good luck with a translation!

i'd love to see the wifi with a translation

. Would be really nice, it's a shame that game never come to the US. I think i will help you, i speak japanase (not 100%), but i dont know how to translate a game.

No offense, but I have a feeling this is one of these:

1. Create new thread saying you're translating a game you want
2. Ask for help
3. Get the person to help you to do all the work while you pretend to be "learning" to ROM hack/translate.

A lot of these "I'm translating blah blah, need help" turn out like that. They are just made to call attention to the game and to get someone to do the work for you.

As others have mentioned this translation gig is very time consuming so if you are going to attract a translator you need to prove you can at least do the gruntwork and translate the bulk of the text.

This is usually done by breaking down the rom and changing the text into anything you please and in the case of the DS it never hurts to give a breakdown of the files in the rom, their uses and their structure.

A bad example perhaps (far too little done) but roughly what I mean:

Okay guys i mean this serious and if i could japanese i would do it myself
wink.gif
(and i would like not to use translation tools unless there is no other way
smile.gif
)

In the game are actually txt files for the menu, story,... so it´s pretty easy after what i´ve seen.
(not sure about pointers after what thedicemaster said at least what i tried worked)

I´ve already edited the font (wasn´t needed anyway but i inserted a few button icons)

The edited font (sorry it´s a bit big
smile.gif
)
dump.png

And to the text files there are in the data\text
smile.gif
directory and using SJIS encoding
The rest are graphics and they are already in english (if there is text in it)

As example for NOVICE difficultly (already changed)
Code:
%3c?????????????%c?
Controls
????%3c??????%c
????%3c??????%c
???\??%3cTurn?Left\Right%c
? Button?%3c????%c
? Button?%3c??%c
? Button?%3c????????%c
? Button?%3cWeapon?Change%c
???????????%3c?????%c

%3c text %c - shows text in orange colour
? - is the icon for the digipad
?,?,?,?,?,?,? - are the other button icons up,down, left, right,a,b and so on
(I overwrote the old japanese characters with button icons)

Here is a picture how it looks in the game

And yep i´m still learning but it´s really not like i don´t know what i´m doing

You didn't do anything that shows you're capable of managing the whole translation, changing the font around with NFTR Edit doesn't mean anything, you should go practice some more and come back, me things...

Edit: Scratch what I just said, I'm just being harsh.

Yes i now that it´s easy but that´s what i´ve done already. And like i said it was anyway not really needed.
Anyway these are basically only text file it´s not difficult at all
wink.gif
.

But okay what do i need then to show you then !?

Here something what i´ve already done with Chrono Trigger DS (after figuring how to make the custom table this wasn´t difficult too)
extrasitemencyoy6.png

or search here after Final Fantasy Dissidia even if it´s still not finished

(our translator have a new girlfriend and this takes time

Okay

But sometimes i understand you guys

the text is quite simple to edit, but unless you change some hardcoded stuff about font width, and message lengths you will be very limited in how much you can actually write down
and you will have to cut out a lot of details.

i know because i once tried translating this game(but failed because of lack of interest and because i was limited to "good guesses" using babelfish and google translate)

in japanese it's possible to write up to 4 times as much in those tiny textboxes than you can in english.

There's an easy solution, a smaller font
wink.gif
It always gets the job done and also having a few more textboxes than the original Japanese game had won't hurt

a problem tough is that airplane and weapon descriptions, as well as the information pages are limited to 1 message box with a set length.(you can go beyond the set length, but then the text goes off-screen)
and i think you'd have to modify some hard-coded info about the font to get a smaller font to work.

Dual tile encoding perhaps? Possibly even spin it in with a smaller font.

It is not as though there is a lack of characters available to sacrifice.

I don't think so, it usually works for me without any extra work :/

As long as there is a nice VWF there's no need for a dual tile encoding I think :/
