PS1/2 Jak 2 - Trouble accessing debug mode

The debug mode for Jak 2 (and every other game in the trilogy) has a hidden debug mode. It can be activated using sequential button presses.

The first code is (while holding down L3) UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, X, X, SQUARE, CIRCLE, SQUARE, CIRCLE. (You will hear a sound afterwards indication that you did the proper combination) The second code is the same as the first, but in a reversed order. However, I haven't been able to get it to work. (The first code works perfectly for me, but the second isn't working.)

Could anyone give me assistance in figuring out how to make this work?

How did you get it to work? I've input the codes several times, and never been successful.

I had to input them during a cutscene. I'm not sure why this makes it work, but it's easier than inputting the same sequence 20 times in a row.
