well now you don't have to buy a tool to "jailbreak" anymore so there no cost involved, money wise. You can now use custom firmware which will allow you install and play homebrew (ftp servers, emulators, backup managers). With a backup manager you can backup your games and play them off hard drive without switching your discs. The negative thing is you can't be on newest firmware currently and really shouldn't go online. So you pretty much have to choose between PSN/online and custom firmware.
