Hacking Issue with Advance Wars DS

I'm wasn't sure which subforum I should put this into so I decided to try here.

I recently acquired an R4 DS and I have tried to play Advance Wars : Dual Strike on it. Now, looking at the R4 compatibility list, AWS should play fine. Single player is flawless but I'm trying to play wirelessly with my friend. The set up is :

Me (DS Lite) - R4, AWS ROM -> Friend (DS Lite) - AWS Cart

We have managed to connect wirelessy with other games, but the connection meter in AWS remains red, as if it cannot recognise the other DS in the room.

Has anyone managed to get wireless play working with this set up?

Are you using the same region of the game?
I mean if your friends uses the usa cart you have to use the usa rom...

Ah-ha!

He's using the european version and I'm using the USA Rom. I presumed it wouldn't be an issue saying that the carts are region free. Thanks, I'll try the european ROM.
