You could turn on spotpass and streetpass on emunand even connect to your router and have a wifi connection to use the internet browser and stuff. Because on Emunand you are already at 7.1 so there is no reason for their to be a new update. Just make sure you turn off spotpass and streetpass and have no Wifi settings on on your real nand.

cheers snailface, I have a feeling I'll leave as is. I don't think I'll need the interner connection or eshop etc. My 'concern' now is, should I/could I, back up this nand/emunand thingy to help me revert back to my ver 4.2/4.4 if my kids happen to update?

Definitely yes. Just use the launcher's menu to make nand backups and save them to a PC. Hopefully you'll never have to use them. That would require some non-trivial hardware modding to reflash them.

Definitely yes. Just use the launcher's menu to make nand backups and save them to a PC. Hopefully you'll never have to use them. That would require some non-trivial hardware modding to reflash them.

Basically, it would require some soldering. It's actually not a simple task to do as it would require to disassemble your 3DS

The parental control PIN no longer stops updates. The only safe thing is to never turn on the Wi-Fi switch. You might be safe at home with the Wi-Fi switch on with the two consoles playing MK7 against each other (with no connection to the Internet) but if they ever leave the house with it still on, they might accidentally pick up an update. Or if a neighbour sets up a homepass system, you might accidentally connect to that and also download the update.

Because I'm walking around with Wifi enabled all the time. Never stay on my 4.3 though and immediately go to the Emunand Version.

I already saw I got some stuff downloaded like Videos or Mii Streetpass channel update.
It can brick my console?

Would suck because I have MK7 preinstalled and enjoy playing it online.
I thought the worst that can happen is my Emunand partion bricking.

Hey keldoggg if I were you I would back up the nand and store it in a safe place because it is the only way you will ever have a chance to get your old firmware back should you accidentally update because all firmware is encrypted to work with only 1 3ds!! Backing the nand up is easy. You just click back up nand in the gateway GUI menu. It will then copy your nand to the SD card. Once its done simply remove and copy file to your PC. As far as getting the old firmware back on to 3ds does require hardware modification which sounds scary but isn't too bad especially if you have an xl(its easier to mod). Basically all you do is solder a 4 wire cord in the right spots to the bottom of chip and other side to an SD card adapter. They have forums specifically for that job.

I don't think he's using emuNand - btw keldog, EmuNand is a virtual OS installed "inside" your current one. Using that, your system will stay on 4.x but you can go into 7.1 to use eShop and full wifi. But, it's a little difficult to use and the wrong move could ruin your system, plus you have children playing on it so I don't think it's the best idea. I would recommend making sure the wireless is never on outside the house - as others have said, Bestbuy, McDonalds, etc provide "Nintendo Zone" - a free network in which the 3DS can connect to and download updates.

If you keep wireless contained home, you should be good to go. The only issue would be soemthing very rare - a neighbor sets up "HomePass" which is a Nintendo Zone inside your home with some other features. If the 3DS's find that fake Nintendo Zone, they can download the update from there. To check for a nearby HomePass network, use a wifi device or something to search for nearby networks. If something is named the_Cloud or attwifi, it's a Homepass network.

thanks for your replies guys, this back up stuff really does sound scary! We are going on holiday to Jamaica in a few weeks and the hotel is advertised as having free wifi, I just hope that the consoles don't update while we are there as our boys will want to play on an evening whilst we indulge in the rite that is known as 'Red Stripe'!!!

I am running r4i on my boy's consoles so how do I back up the nand on that?

I'm sure if our consoles were ever to update, I wouldn't be able to reconfigure myself and would have to take them somewhere, but at lest I would have the ver 4.2 & 4.4 to fall back on?
