Hi. I recently got a switch and i want to block the 3DS because my brother will tell me: you already have a switch let me use the 3DS. Is there a way i can set a passcode so i can prevent my brother from bricking it?

If you have Luma installed, you can do this:

Power your 3DS off. Hold Select while powering on and the Luma configuration shows up. Go to the PIN lock option and set it to how many digits you want the passcode to be. You can set it to 4 or 6 or 8. (Highlight the option and press A to toggle.) Then press Start and enter the code you want to have. You can use the A B X Y Up Down Left and Right buttons.

You will then have to enter that code every time you boot Luma. To change or remove the code, just enter the configuration again and change it from there.

If you forget the code... well, you can just delete Luma's settings. Which means that the passcode is resettable if your brother can take your SD card out and plug it into a computer.

A more secure method does exist, but if you use that and forget the passcode, the system is effectively bricked, as there is no way to reset it.

Asking out of curiosity, wouldn’t magnethax and a good nand dump be able to bypass that?

The luma method or the more secure one?

The luma method stores the code on the SD card, so restoring Nand does nothing. Deleting the file from the SD card removes it, though.

As for the second way... only if you have a Nand dump from before the code was set AND you restore in a way that removes B9S.

tbh I'd just get them a cheap 3ds system. You can get 3dsxls at used game stores for like $50.
Or you could just put everything that has the ability to brick the system in one folder and put do not touch (a.k.a. FBI, anything that can explore nand partitions, and so on)

Side note, it's NTRBoot, not magnethax. And yes, NTRBoot would be able to bypass the Luma3DS pin and really any security measure that boots after the bootrom. That being said, setting a pin through Luma3DS will pretty much prevent anyone who doesn't know what they are doing from messing with the system.
