PS1/2 Is it easy to create a FreeHDBoot capable HDD for back up loading?

I have a unit I want to buy that comes with Free HDBoot for a PS2 for loading back ups off an external HDD. The problem is, its only a 320GB drive. I want to replace it with a spare 1TB I have lying around. The unit does not come with a modded memory card, its running straight off the HDD.

Since I know the unit is capable of being modded to run FreeHDBoot right off the HDD, is it hard to replace the 320 with a 1TB drive? Do I need a modded Memory Card to load FreeHDBoot on a new HDD?

One of many options you have:

- when you own an IDE to USB or IDE to SATA Adapter or onboard IDE Port on your PC.
- then you can get WinHIIP (it prepares your HDD and gets your Games on it).

So in this case I need a IDE to SATA Adapter, Then either connect direct to PC via my mobo or a USB adapter. Then I can install FreeHDBoot and the games?

My main concern is being able to install the main FreeHDBoot exploit on my new replacement drive.

Additionally, I just realized the PS2 adapter does not work with SATA drives, but IDE drives. If I use a IDE to SATA adapter, can I still connect it to the PS2 and run games off it?

Do you get an FreeHD Boot CD with your purchase(d) PS2 ? Is FreeMCBoot (FMCB) on the Memory Card and comes it also with your buyed package ?

You should install a FreeHDBoot package on your new hard drive.

I know there are some more recent but i didn't try them.

Be careful, the SATA PS2 adapter aren't genuine.
Even though they work pretty well (i own one), they still have compatibility issues (i had a lot of random freeze playing Ico on mine, i finally played it on an IDE).

I did this mod on one of my PS2, and using a SD extension cord, it's even easier to manage your game collection.

You can use HDL-Dump's "INITIALIZE" feature to write a MBR file to a hard disk, or flash a premade FHDB/HDDOSD image to it, as a free initial entrypoint only requiring such a disk to be connected to the console;

Neither of these 2 methods is proper, so you should only use them to boot wLaunchELF, enter the HDD Manager and reformat the disk (which properly sets up the APA partition "table" on the whole disk and the standard system partitions), then run the FHDB installer from an usb drive (which installs the FHDB files, an appropriate MBR, and enables the HDD boot flag on the console which avoids the HDD resetting halfway through every boot)

And remember: always turn off the console with the mechanical power switch before inserting or removing anything in the expansion port - you wouldn't be the first or the fiftieth to blow the HDD power fuses...
