Ok I've got as far as finding the knife, but the next step wasn't there so I assumed I had to cut my carotid artery to let out all the blood so it wouldn't get in the way during the procedure. Now I'm feeling tired and feeble. Did I brick?

yeah but it's like making a "noob friendly diy open heart bypass" thread....sure you can say "you must be a qualified heart surgeon, but the fact it's so dumbed down makes it seem very attractive to (for lack of a better word) noobs, and the thing about noobs, one of their main features is a insane ability to skim over warnings and skip steps on even the most "noob friendly" of guides

basically all I am saying is that hardmods are never noob friendly, and trying to put it forward as such only invites things like this to happen

the truth is at one point fairly early on I had made a full video guide on doing hardmods, I was about to publish it and seen 2 threads where people had messed up so badly and we're still under the belief that they had done a mighty fine job despite part being missing and what looked like a hardmod performed by blowtorch I decided I didn't want to be responsible for such messups XD

PS sorry op I am not trying to make a big point of this ofcourse everyone is more than welcome to give things a go and from the looks of it you are willing to accept your mistake which is nice, but that's not always the case and sometimes people who mess up go on the attack and blame everyone else for their mistake, it's those kinds of people I would discourage from trying anything

I guess I don't agree because I'm super glad the guide was there. Otherwise my ONLY option would've been to send it to a hardmodder, when I already had the stuff I needed lying around. The only thing I had to buy was a compatible sd card reader, which was like 10 bucks.

I don't think it's like doing open heart surgery on yourself either, like at all. You're literally soldering 4 wires to your videogame that's probably already bricked, and one of them is ground, easy. I know mine was bricked and that's why I looked into it. I had some experience soldering already, but it's not hard to learn.

If you're lucky, there's nothing fried. Just removing the cables and cleaning it up should let the 3DS boot up normally.

no the point is literally all the info was already there free for anyone to put in a few minutes to read, if you had experience soldering then you could easily put 2 and 2 together it was even laid out with pretty little pictures, all the thread done is format it a bit nicer and re-used the same pictures that were already available there and put the words NOOB friendly at the start, anyways if you think encouraging "noobs" is a great idea then thats fine but your saying you already had soldering experience so you cant use yourself as a example of a noob success story as by your own admission you wasn't a noob

i think your thinking that without that guide the info was some state secret, it wasn't there all along and really easy to find for anyone who could be bothered to use google

So it's bricked, not booting up normally either way.

I did practice soldering for two weeks and even then the guide never made me foolhardy. I knew the risk and went in cuz I had a brick and no professional help to fix it. At least I had clear instructions and knew where exactly I messed up.

But I can see some teenager who helped his dad in the garage think he can totally do this in 10 min before bedtime.

Rather than an bypass surgery I would compare it to a grosser haemoerrroid surgery. It can be done by a layman by simply tying a dental floss on it, but should you? not unless you have zero access to medical help because u risk bleeding out. Does it work? Yup, there are success stories.


update: Been busy with personal stuff, can visit the mobile repair shop probably by next Friday. Will update then.

true, sorry for all the off topic crap, and i totally understand why people choose/want to try themselves and i honestly understand, the main thing was with the old threads people could ask for help/advice/tips and begin to feel comfortable before jumping into the real stuff, idk maybe its just my opinion, but it feels like having it listed as a noob friendly list kinda detracts from the inherent feeling that your doing something pretty risky, sure some people will do it and be like "urrrggghhhh this is soooo scary"..........."huh wtf that was piss easy" other will go in thinking "god this is going to be so easy" and end up breaking it before they even get the case open, i guess its just that the old threads required a bit of reading to get you familiar with the process, the abc guide isnt ever going to cover all the things you will actually run into doing something like soldering for the first time and leaves people heading into it in the mind set of "wow only 4 steps yippees i can do this blindfolded"

anyway good luck, and make sure they are careful getting that blob off the resistor array as right now it looks like its just resting on it, if it gets heated up it could work its way right into it and it would be 100x harder to clean up

also if you plan on soldering more, a useful thing you should probably own, if you're having trouble regulating the amounts of solder you're using, you should maybe buy a solder sucker.

if there's a large bridge or it's superficial, sucking the excess off is a great way to fix it right up. (and may be just what the guys at the mobile repair shop end up using, though sometimes I think having 3 hands while using it would most certainly be a boon).

I've found that solder suckers are pretty much only useful to clean a through-hole hole. They're pretty much useless for everything else.

So in this case, braid or bust.

I've had nothing but good experiences with a solder sucker, holes or no holes, but I suppose either way it becomes personal preference and experiences. Though no matter what you do, a third arm is always beneficial.

Just clean it up, put a backup you should've made if you were following the guide properly on an sd card or flashdrive, and send them off to @vb_encryption_vb. He can hardmod it and unbrick it for you. He won't service a o3ds non xl if that's what your trying to hardmod. If you have an o3ds non xl, your only option is @hundshamer. But beware, if you use hundshamer, you won't get your console back for months.
