The folks over at the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction research group (University of Grenoble, France) just released to the public their glasses-free 3D app for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4.

Unlike the technology used in the Nintendo 3DS, which uses multi-layer screens to simulate a 3D experience, this app uses head-tracking mechanisms to tweak the image displayed on the device, based on the location of the viewer. The result: one of the – if not the – most impressive glasses-free 3D demo for the iPhone and iPad we’ve seen thus far.

To simulate 3D, the app uses the device’s front camera to track the movements of the viewer, and automatically generates pictures designed to simulate the third dimension, on a plain flat screen.

    Look at the Flag...
    Works fine on my iTouch4.

But the 3D effect is IMO more impressive on the youtube video than on your device.

the idea is similar to the 3DS 3D system.. its cool, but this looks like some sort of copying to me. Still nice.

The DSi had a game like that. Some idiots used it as 3DS prediction back then.

It won't be impressive coz the 3DS is true 3D, this just like the dsi 3D, remember that game using head tracking via the front camera?

Yeah, you move your head and... lose the 3D effect.

    heartgold: exactly.

    It's completely different.

The DSi can do the exact same thing. It renders a normal 3D scene, then it tracks your movement with the camera. When it detects rotation, the objects get rendered from a different angle.
Both eyes see the same thing. So it's the same "3D" that we have since years on PC and consoles.

The only new thing is: It moves around in relation to your point of view.

"Real" 3D on the other hand can only be achieved when you render two different images for each eye. That's what happens in 3D cinema or the 3DS. That's only possible with a special screen (3DS) or glasses (cinema/TV).

The 3DS could do both with its camera - it could render two different images for each eye, to give a "real 3D" illusion, and it could at the same time track your movement with its camera to enable you to look around the scenes. (you would probably loose the sweet spot - so you could turn off the "real 3D" and be left with the head tracking 3D)

Like you really need to move you head that much or even for most not that easy to lose, besides the 3DS has a better effect.

This is rubbish, and is NOT 3D. This is just head tracking. simple as that. a head tracking demo.
any system with a camera can do this.
3DS would make this look awesom but on any 2D screen like an Apple product the effect is crappy unless you make a video of it.
3DS is REAL 3D. This is not even close.
