Programming on an embedded system is perhaps the 'absolute worst' way to learn to program.

Yes, it is an opinion, what you think is the best language is what you think is the best language. For learning to program, I actually suggest something that keeps things simple, but doesn't do things for you.

In my opinion, the best language to 'learn to program' is Java. For the following reasons: C style syntax, allows for quick prototyping, simple types, garbage collection, object orientation, descriptive errors (usually), and it works on most systems. These all help make it easy to learn, and thus easy to learn on.

As far as IDEs go, I am a die hard Eclipse user, however they all have their high and low points.
