Well look for a x360usb pro, get that and everything will be smooth sailing. I got one and it was one of the best things I brought for flashing my 360. I would like to suggest getting one at Deal Extreme.

The whole point of constantly updating the custom dvd firmware is to keep live access. Where should you start? Jungle flasher tutorial. It has a flow chart and will tell you everything you need to know.

That was more or less true up until 2 updates (or the beta of it) ago to say nothing of the AP2.5 and XDG3 stuff (a ripping firmware should be available shortly to sort this). Nowadays updates are less bugfixes and attempts to be more livesafe and more keeping the whole thing carrying on as well as games working. +1 to the jungleflasher tutorial though although it falls a bit short in places compared to what could be done and naturally is a bit jungeflasher centric (dosflash got an update a little while ago) so if the OP or others have questions do ask as it is usually easier to sort problems.

I will also note the recent reset glitch hacks which show a lot of promise.

you can only play region free games or games that aren't locked to your region, quite a few maybe like half of xbox360 games are other region compatible but it all depends on the game.

Losing live doesnt have to be a problem, for instant infinity ward (or who ever it is) doesnt care if you mod on Nazi Zombies solo or offline because it doesnt affect other players online. Im assuming other companies would do that.

No region free without a JTAG machine, there might be a method in the near future with the new reset glitch if we can edit keyvaults but you might as well just do the reset glitch and gain proper region free.

This being said it is not quite as bad as it could be unless you have a Japanese machine. Certainly there are times where you would want one of the regions- Japanese shmups and beat em ups mainly, Europe does a lot of western RPGs that take ages to come out stateside and the US still gets things that take a while to appear in Europe although for the most part that time limit is down in the days up to around 2 weeks for the most part. You can try to predict what region a game might be as some developers/publishers favour locking but that is an inexact science to say the least. http://www.abgx.net/filename/?ch=6 has a nice database of games and their region locking status, http://abgx360.net/verified.php some more and the program available on the second link can tell you if you have an iso in front of you. Scene groups should say what region locks are in place but sometimes they are a bit lax about this and if you do have a Japanese system sometimes things are called region free despite having Japan locked out. Personally unless you are a fan of sports games (and even then it is nothing major) a "PAL" console is probably the best region to have (for about the first time in history).

360 DVD drives are tied to the console so you will need DVD keys which I am willing to be is the issue here (quick question- do DVDs appear as "data disc" and does it read videos- DVD keys are likely the issue).

If it has not been updated since August 11th 2009 (easy to test- https://docs.google.com/View?id=dnfmv5h_30dw33vpf4 ) then you can do the JTAG hack which allows you to run everything from USB or hard drive if you want but it does involve some soldering (also on that guide).

If it has been updated since August 11th 2009 (most likely) then there is the fairly recent reset glitch hack although it is not as developed as the JTAG one with regards to USB and hard drive loading (there is none but when it comes it should be up there with JTAG).
Both those hacks will give you your CPU and DVD keys which can be used to to make the DVD work again.

After this you can download XBLA and GOD installs and if you are not banned from live there is the possibly still the no-JTAG stuff (formerly profile sharing).

The only other hack is somewhat pointless without DVD drives- some DLC came as installers (fallout 3 and borderlands double pack although not GOTY being the main two) and I guess you can mod some saves. You do this by either reading the hard drive or if it is at a new enough update then using USB support (you allow the 360 to reserve some space on a USB drive at which point it acts like a hard drive or memory card you can far more easily read and write to with tools like XTAF) as well but it is kind of pointless (no games to use it on).
