Maybe 'cause you weren't "cool respect worthy" for them either?
On a serious note, yea sure you could encounter hackers/cheaters that'd certainly ruin your game, but is it all players are like that? Certainly no, unless it's Pokémon, then steer away unless you too are using hacked/ edited Pokemons..

I mean playing via lan connection. Not Online. If I want to play Online I can just play Roblox. The 3ds is meant for those by the Fireplace at night time with a friend while its raining outside with the window open Gameplay.
