Hardware Oldies I keep hearing how Sega Dreamcast owners up til this very day are still able to connect and play online multiplayer(on Quake 3 and PSO).

How are they able to connect their Sega Dreamcast consoles and find online servers for these Dreamcast games with actual Dreamcast consoles and not emulators nor DreamPis?

Teh dream(cast) never dies!

DC nutters are a special breed and its all about real hardware so thats what the main enthusiasts use and what lots of the development caters for. Got to admit the remixed DC with quiet fan, wireless controllers, ROMs loading from a card, HDMI etc... are all very impressive and show the dedication of everyone involved and the small but very active community that keeps the dream alive.

I hope to follow behind them, the Dreamcast is a retro console I would love to own for how its atmosphere is.

Its got a great scene, then and now. Back then it was something awesome indeed as the nerdosity and community involved in cracking it was a lot of fun. That just evolved into the Xbox which was really the DC2 and it also had an amazing scene, in many ways the high point of homebrew because it gave you everything a modern Android box can do now 20 years ago for not much money.

First time we'd seen so much power and so much talent as well as the nascent net which allowed people to pool their talent before it all became a popularity contest with perpetual SOONing and the rest of the entitled antics from leechers who should just STFU and know their place.

Back to the DC, the prices they charge for all the kit is crazy. A fully loaded machine would really run your pockets if you want all the bells and whistles. That and upscaling + quality of life improvements and savestates make emulation much more viable for me, especially on this new wave of portables that are coming this year for less than 500.

Thanks for the link. It's crazy how strong the love for the Sega Dreamcast still is right now. The Sega Dreamcast is so well-beloved we almost got a crowdfunded Dreamcast 2 by Project Dream, until it was, unfortunately, all canceled.

It really was the Vita of its time.

I don't really go for FPGA based consoles but a modern hardware recreation of this would be interesting. The new generation of Open handheld devices are also finally specced enough to emulate DC well which is also good news.

Best thing ever would be a 100% working port of Flycast to Vita as those super colorful games on that screen along with the irony of two immortal consoles meeting thanks to the efforts of the community would be something.
