What is was thinking was: You know how some Jailbreaks are tethered? I was wondering if it was possible/at all realistic to make a portable case of some kind that tricks your tethered ipod into thinking it is plugged into a computer so it can unlock without needing to carry around a laptop all the time. I was just thinking of this because all the exploits out right now for 4.1 are tethered on my ipod (2g MC model) and supposedly SHAtter is going to be tethered as well and I was hoping this would be possible. Let me know what you think.

If it helps I do have a Basic Stamp microprocessor and some PBasic skills...
I doubt that can help me with this but it could be worth a shot...

They actually had something like that for blackra1n.

^a few more ?s

1)what is it called?

2)do i need to buy it? is it cheap?

3)can i make my own? will it be easy? where would i get the parts?

4) am i asking way too many questions?

SHAtter is tethered, but it's unpatchable. They said it would be possible to release something in Cydia every time a new firmware comes out that untethers it. That would work then and not now since Cydia wouldn't get permenentaly erased (reinstallable)

you'll have to wait then, also I've seen guys to it for home stuff but never selling the design

Shatter shouldn't be too long, if it's a bootroom I don't see why they don't release it now

The sooner they release it, the sooner Apple update the bootrom for new iPods, iPhones and iPads, and the less vulnerable devices there are. It makes far more sense to finish it and test it thoroughly. Bit disappointing that it's tethered, hadn't heard that till now. Still, if it can be untethered with a Cydia package with each update, that's pretty sweet.

Why not just keep your iPod in lock mode rather then shutting it down? That is what i do :/

But I suspose it COULD be done, but i have no idea how

^because i do a lot of traveling and camping where lock mode just is not a very good choice because it use up my battery even while i am not using it and if i spill water on my ipod while it is in lock mode it could short-circuit without a chance to fix it while if it gets wet when it is turned off, i have a chance to dry it up.

@aldisl do you have pictures or youtube videos of it i could look at?

http://www.gadgetsdna.com/ikey-dongle-for-...jailbreak/1295/

This is the sort of thing that has been made, but there is no reason it could not be built into a case of some sort too. I remember seeing a similar video previously, but it was far bulkier. This one is quite small be comparison.

It should also be noted that a device like this would need to be update-able so it could boot an iOS device on the latest version of iOS with the latest tethered jailbreak.

EDIT: More links:

http://www.techhail.com/iphone/idongle-and...ipod-touch/4036
http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/03/idongle...l-video-review/

These mention the iDongle as well as the iKey (iKey is the first one I posted). The iDongle is the bulkier version I mentioned. However, it seems to have a USB port for updating that the iKey lacks. Regardless, I don't think either are actually available for purchase
