No, seriously! I just LOVE the GameCube layout. So much so that, I have 8 active GameCube styled controllers with another three just chillin and one on the way. I'll admit that none of these controllers are official Nintendo controllers but 5 of the 8 (active) are licensed by Nintendo and the last three were made by Hyperkin with Nintendo's blessing. I often say that it's a tie between the Wii Remote/Nunchuck combo and the GameCube controller when it comes to my "favorite" controller of all time. That said, my Gamecube to Wii Remote ratio is very lopsided. I just feel at home with the GameCube layout. for the Controllers I use for PC gaming, I color (X) and (Y), blue and Yellow respectively but still, it's the good ol layout I've been using since 2001. Miyamoto once said that he wanted this controller to be a standard for 10 years. It's 2019 and the controller is still around in some fashion. A prime example of how fucking awesome the controller is!

There is one thing that bothers me. 3 triggers. 2 on the right, 1 on the left.
If it had 4 triggers, it would be perfect.

I guess the point of the Z button is alternate functions, i.e. Z+L = ZL; Z+R = ZR.
Some games have done it like that and it was fine (e.g. SSX). Some crambed more functions into just Z (e.g. James Bond EoN) and some games completely left out ZL (like Capcom vs SNK 2 (not good).
There used to be a GC controller in the size of a key chain (and meant for key chains), but I'm not sure how or whether it worked.

I agree with you. It's the main reason why none of my active GameCube controllers are official ones. None of the ones in active status have analog triggers (which is a crying shame). The two I have for Wii U have everything minus clickable sticks. The remaining 6 have all buttons needed for modern gaming but again, are missing analog triggers.

Actually, I sort of disagree with that. In my experience having dual trigger buttons on both sides is a waste. By that I mean, usually in most games it's awkward to actually use all four buttons on top. Especially on the left side I position my hand lower to get a good grip for leveraging quick actions on the analog stick. On the right side, while I'd like my hand to be a similar position, I tend to have it a bit higher for rapid up/down movement on buttons. So, really one trigger on either side were my index finger rests would be preferable*. However, if there's going to be an extra button in relatively easy reach, I'd rather it be one on the right side.

* Now, things would be a bit different if they had a lower, more inlet rest for my middle fingers for a another set of triggers, but I've never seen that design and I tend to question how stable that'd be.

It's just that little bit too small for me, making my hands cramp up after extended plays, and that d-pad... that's got to be one of the worst positions I've ever seen, certainly the worst on any Nintendo controller/handheld - but again that could all be due to my large hands.
Smash Bros though, well I can't play that with anything else....
