Which gen ipod is the current one and can I jailbreak the current one.

3rd Gen is the current one and yes you can jailbreak it

Be careful when purchasing an iPod touch; the 8 GB one is actually an "MC" model iPod touch 2G. The 32 GB and 64 GB models are iPod touch 3G.

Keep in mind Apple will release the iPod touch 4G within a month or so. You may or may not be able to jailbreak it when it's released (along with iOS 4.1).

Jailbreaks do come out fast though, so no worries if he gets the 4G.
