Maybe Nintendo decided it wasn't worth spending money running these forums when fan sites are providing the same services?
More like not worth putting money in enforcing "nazi" censorship of things they don't like when they could rather put money in writing C&Ds and DMCAs 
That's for the Nintendo of America forums, that is - the European pre-2006 ones were a lot more chill, nobody got offended if you talked about crazy bugs in Pokemon, and I think I was the first to post there about the DS secret button combo
